The Norwegian Maritime AI Centre (MAI) is a national research and innovation initiative led by NTNU, aimed at accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence in the maritime sector. By bringing together industry, academia, and technology partners, the centre develops AI solutions, data infrastructure, and practical applications across the entire maritime value chain.

The centre focuses on turning data into value by improving efficiency, safety, and sustainability in maritime operations. A key ambition is to ensure that advanced research is closely linked to real industry needs, enabling faster implementation and tangible impact. Hence, to ensure broad participation and impact, the centre is structured with different partner levels:

  • Tier 1 partners are core partners with a strategic role in shaping the centre’s direction and activities

  • Tier 2 partners contribute actively to projects and use case development

  • Tier 3 partners are part of the extended ecosystem, and as member of Blur maritime cluster, the companies automatically qualifies as Tier 3 partner.

GCE Blue Maritime Cluster’s Role

We act as a bridge between research and industry, ensuring that knowledge developed in the centre is translated into real value for maritime companies within the cluster.

Through our position in the maritime cluster, we connect industry needs with research capabilities, helping ideas move from concept to application.

Our role includes:

  • Mobilising industry – engaging companies and linking them to relevant projects and opportunities

  • Facilitating collaboration – creating arenas where companies, researchers, and students develop use cases together

  • Translating knowledge – making AI understandable and actionable for maritime actors

  • Accelerating innovation – supporting the journey from research results to implementation and business value

  • Strengthening the ecosystem – connecting partners, infrastructure, and initiatives across the cluster

Join the Voyage

Whether you are a student, researcher, or industry partner, there are many ways to get involved, from participating in use cases and student projects to attending workshops, webinars, and AI bootcamps.
