Blue Mussel Feed

Time frame: 01.10.2022 - 28.02.2026

The BlueMusselFeed project has looked at the entire value chain – from cultivation and processing to testing in feed and evaluation of meat quality – with the aim of making blue mussels a commercial feed ingredient for chicken and potentially other livestock. The development of new animal feed requires a team of experts from very different industries and fields. Therefore, BlueMusselFeed has gathered experts in aquaculture (Ocean Forrest, Eide) and feed (Fiskå), along with chicken producers (Nortura) and experts in animal welfare, food safety, and meat quality (Animalia, NMBU).

NCE Blue Legasea has participated in the project as part of Land Meets Sea, which consists of the clusters Blue Legasea, Heidner Biocluster, Biotech North, and Seafood Innovation. The clusters have had communication responsibility in the project.

Gjøsund Harbor

Timeline: 01/31/25 - 03/31/26

NCE Blue Legasea is participating in a project related to the development of Gjøsund Harbor. The project aims to find better ways to manage marine bycatch – such as heads, bones, and trimmings from fish – instead of throwing it into the sea.

Today, the fishing fleet is calling for a place to deliver this bycatch, as well as a solution that makes it profitable to bring it to land. The project gathers various stakeholders to map out what resources are available, how they can be further utilized, and what is needed to create new collaborations and business models. The goal is to better utilize marine resources, create increased value, and contribute to more sustainable development across industries.

Nordic Nexus Network

Project start: 01.09.2025

NCE Blue Legasea is – together with other Nordic partners, part of a new collaboration led by the Iceland Ocean Cluster and funded by Nordic Innovation. The Nordic Nexus Network is laying the foundation for a connected and sustainable Nordic innovation ecosystem — one that can turn great ideas into real-world solutions.

The goal is to create a Nordic innovation pipeline where startups and SMEs can develop, test, and scale new technologies and business models in the areas of food, water, and energy. By linking existing local ecosystems, the project enables more efficient sharing of infrastructure, knowledge, and market access.

Petfood Business Network – pilot project

Timeframe: March 2025 – March 2026

NCE Blue Legasea, Orivo AS, and several other stakeholders are initiating the establishment of a business network for pet food, with the aim of strengthening the competitiveness of Norwegian companies in pet food based on marine raw materials.

The global market for pet food is experiencing strong growth, and pet owners are increasingly conscious of the content, quality, and origin of the feed. The demand for products with marine ingredients is rising, while large amounts of marine raw materials remain underutilized. This presents significant opportunities for Norwegian players.

Several companies have already developed products in this segment but face challenges with international market access. Increased focus on transparency and sustainability provides a competitive edge for those who can document quality throughout the value chain.

WIN BIG

Time frame: 06/01/2023 – 06/01/2026

Marine industries represent a large number of jobs and have a need for new skills. There is a need for more focus on promoting women's capacity and skills for future value creation. Our region must be well-connected to further development, work processes, and activities related to women's positions and increased participation in marine industries in Europe.

Blue Legasea contributes to the WIN BIG project by facilitating placements for female students from high school with marine-based companies in the region. By giving young women the opportunity to get to know local businesses, there is a chance to strengthen both recruitment and diversity in an industry with significant growth opportunities.

Land meets Sea

Timeframe: March 2025 – March 2026

Land Meets Sea is a collaboration between leading Norwegian clusters in agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, and biotechnology: Biotech North, NCE Blue Legasea, NCE Heidner Biocluster, and NCE Seafood Innovation.

The project promotes sustainable innovation and industrial development at the intersection of blue and green bioeconomy, with the goal of transitioning from linear to circular value chains. The work focuses on better resource utilization, lower emissions, increased self-sufficiency, and strengthening of biodiversity.

The main activity is to develop specific, cross-sector projects in the early phase, from concept to pre-project, with the aim of securing further funding. The project has secured over 50 million NOK in public support and mobilized 23.4 million in private capital, totaling 74.5 million NOK.
